Holland Scarth – Mclean Deluxe [Album]

There’s something to this funky introduction to Cincinnati producer Holland Scarth. The album is a collaboration with rapper Devin Burgess. McLean Deluxe is a slow drawling jam session of seemingly re-purposed ’80s-era soundscapes. The nine tracks feature an array of heavily reverberated snares, spacey pads and syrupy vocals. Definitely worth a listen. Continue reading Holland Scarth – Mclean Deluxe [Album]

Ziga Murko – “mr. Morti (himself)”

Practically anyone can make something complicated. It just took me 15+ steps to finish making this grilled cheese sandwich. (Which was delicious.) But, to make something complicated simple, that’s what separates good artists from great ones. Ziga Murko, a Slovenian “trombonist, composer, producer,” does this with his chill, organic beat “mr.Morti (himself).” [via] The track dips its feet in trip-hop, Nightmares On Wax territory, but … Continue reading Ziga Murko – “mr. Morti (himself)”

Octo/Leagues – Octo/Leagues [Beat Tape]

There isn’t a day where I don’t think, “Damn Australia, you fine. Your beat scene? Amazing. And dat ass.” It’s true though. I was talking to Holly from East to West a while back and she said it like this, “One day everyone just dropped their guitars and picked up keyboards.” And, thank Allah for that. From artists like Ta-ku to Charles Murdoch to The Blank—it’s … Continue reading Octo/Leagues – Octo/Leagues [Beat Tape]

J Biscuits – Percs & Curses [EP]

Prepare to be cursed. Cursed to listen to one EP, all day, nonstop. Why? Because. (“Lamest curse ever,” says Sekhemkhet.) Percs & Curses is a sunny day, checkered-blanket picnic lifted away by ants. It’s some sort of bizarro, breezy, 75-degree music burrito—a collage of Eastern influences, bossa nova guitar licks and hip-hop, hipity-hop, boom bap jawns. (Enough qualifiers already!) The five-track EP is also home to some … Continue reading J Biscuits – Percs & Curses [EP]

Constrobuz – Rain and Dust [Beat Tape]

It’s always a good idea to use Times New Roman on an album cover. Just ask NC producer Constrobuz and he’ll agree. So posh. So snooty/business class like. Yeah…. Honestly, I love this Japanese bootleg look—it’s a statement dunk. It’s a, “Yeah, these are some dope jazzy hip-hop beats. It’s so good people are dubbing it on tapes and selling them at street markets/bazaars. Fuck … Continue reading Constrobuz – Rain and Dust [Beat Tape]

Seven Davis Jr. – Lo-Fi Vintage [Album]

Earlier this month, Los Angeles producer (with coolest name in the biz,) Seven Davis Jr. released Lo-Fi Vintage a mostly experimental beat project. The album title is ironic because it’s not completely lo-fi or vintage. It dances between future funk to glitchy, awkward rhythmic beats.  Sometimes he’ll manipulate vocals to soak (wobble, down/up-pitch, flood, distort) within the track’s spastic percussion. Don’t get me wrong, it’s interesting, but it can … Continue reading Seven Davis Jr. – Lo-Fi Vintage [Album]

Nefarious! – The Dream Theory [Album]

Nefarious is “(typically of an action or activity) Wicked or criminal.” It’s a word that’s often replaced by villainous or mischievous—it’s an old term relegated to teen detective novels. Nefarious!, Soul Dojo producer, pumps life back into the word. On The Dream Theory Nef uses heavy 808s, flowing synths and bong gurgles to inflate the tracks until they pop. “Tolerance Break” sounds like a welcome mutation of his … Continue reading Nefarious! – The Dream Theory [Album]

Shatter Hands – 404 Sessions [Album]

What’s fuzzy, spits out bass and sports a mean growl? A grizzly bear!? Yes, but no. It’s Shatter Hands‘s 404 Sessions. (What’s lamer than that intro? Nothing. Sorry.) Really, these beats are fuzzy, jazzy, sweet, sexy, and head nodding bliss. Shatter Hands says, “I bought the Roland SP-404SX back in August 2011….never got around to reading the manual….Then in mid-February 2012 I sat down, read the … Continue reading Shatter Hands – 404 Sessions [Album]

Hashfinger – M.Twelve [Beat Tape]

This is dope. Hashfinger has one part dopeness, two parts hip-hop flowing through his veins. Apparently he’s ill because these competing interests don’t leave much room for blood (which he’s sweat out, along with his tears to make M.Twelve). The UK producer is well versed in the art of turntabilsm and slices smooth, cigar-clipped jazz records into production masterpieces. It has piano samples that tip-toe, dance, chit-chat, … Continue reading Hashfinger – M.Twelve [Beat Tape]
