Holland Scarth – Mclean Deluxe [Album]

There’s something to this funky introduction to Cincinnati producer Holland Scarth. The album is a collaboration with rapper Devin Burgess. McLean Deluxe is a slow drawling jam session of seemingly re-purposed ’80s-era soundscapes. The nine tracks feature an array of heavily reverberated snares, spacey pads and syrupy vocals. Definitely worth a listen. Continue reading Holland Scarth – Mclean Deluxe [Album]

StewRat – Real [Album]

“Trust me / I’m as live as it gets,” is both a (Royce Da 5’9″) vocal sample used in “Fort” and the best way to describeStewRat’s trademark sound. His chops, drops, jazzy guitar samples to his dusty, crate dug, ’60s, ’70s soul record reincarnation is certainly “as live as it gets.” Marinate loves us some StewRat. So, two releases in March, a Marinate Mix and several Soundcloud … Continue reading StewRat – Real [Album]

Soosh – SoFar [EP]

This is outside music. What is this ‘outside’ you speak of? If it’s sunny and around 80 degrees (like it is here) you’ll need to take Soosh’s SoFar outside. Find a nice patch of grass and find joy in watching freshly budded branches sway side-to-side. Hell, I’m inside and listenin’ to these warm rays of sound, clicks, shakers, sliced vocals akin to any breeze with personality … Continue reading Soosh – SoFar [EP]

Brock Berrigan – Daily Routine [Album]

Brock Berrigan, producer from Jersey, decided to compile a few of his Soundcloud joints into a singular, gift-wrapped release for hip-hop heads. Yes, that’s an adult wearing a chicken mask. Two questions: Do you have to wear ridiculous attire to be a musician? Where do you even get a sweet rooster mask like that!? That said, Mr. Berrigan, a.k.a. “the man in the chicken mask,” shouldn’t be reduced to … Continue reading Brock Berrigan – Daily Routine [Album]

Slow Machete – Evening Dust Choir [Album]

Do you ever listen to a song in one tab, a video plays in the other and you think, ‘Hey, that actually didn’t sound too bad?” Okay, I know, it’s usually annoying. However, Slow Machete manages to successfully melt together synth beeps, tribal skin drums and what sounds like B-Roll from a foreign film to create a festive, complex listening experience. See, I needed a … Continue reading Slow Machete – Evening Dust Choir [Album]

Elegant Animals – Spectrum Nocturnal [EP]

Elegant Animals is R&B meets Frank Ocean’s cousin, meets bedroom music, meets organic, overdub vibes, plus three years of guitar lessons. Spectrum Nocturnal is seven tracks of Philly neo-soul—guitar licks, back-‘n-forth piano and the occasional dark synth bass. It’s dope. Where it doesn’t succeed is in it’s predictable, archetypal songwriting “It was another dream, common theme”, “It was my mistake.” (“My Mistake” being a Marvin … Continue reading Elegant Animals – Spectrum Nocturnal [EP]

Kae – “MOVE/LOVE” [Free DL]

Scoop some ice, pour a glass of bourbon and get comfortable. You’ll be here for a while. Kae, an Italian singer/songwriter, brings the jazz club to your headphones with a cover of Robert Glasper’s “MOVE/LOVE.” So, relax, stay a while. This is gorgeous. The title’s slash is presumably added because there’s no way either can exist without the other when listening to her smoky, lay-atop-the-piano, … Continue reading Kae – “MOVE/LOVE” [Free DL]

RIM4R – Closer [Album]

So, is RIMAR pronounced Re-Mar or Rim-Are? I’d like to think it’s Re-Mar because his sounds are extremely replayable. Closer‘s six (seven if you include the 24 second intro) tracks deserve a second, third, fourth listen to fully grasp what’s going on with all the layers he’s producing. On one level it’s a bed of clouds. Another floor up it’s angels playing harp, tinkering, plucking and … Continue reading RIM4R – Closer [Album]
