This is hip-hop. Is there a “hip-hop” track on the radio that doesn’t sound like a KORG climax? No. Broke/, producer from Santa Ana, remains rooted to the jazzy, chop and place sampling that’s made the hip-hop sound so unique. It’s refreshing. Rough Jewels clocks in at a meager eight minutes, which, is most unfortunate. Each track focuses on a sample then it’s stumbling and improvising its way to the finish line. Sometimes the loops are crisp, smoky manipulations, other times it’s a piano twanging boom bap joint. But, it is always interesting. This is hip-hop.
